Estate & ranch gates

An estate or ranch gate is more than an opening in a fence. It is often the first part of the property visitors see — but it also has to work every day, fitting the driveway, the vehicles, the grade and the surrounding fence.

Custom entrances

Built around the driveway, not a catalog size

Modern Fence Company designs, fabricates, installs, and repairs custom estate and ranch gates throughout Fort Smith, Western Arkansas, and Eastern Oklahoma.

We build entrances for

  • Large residential properties
  • Rural homes
  • Private estates
  • Farms
  • Ranches
  • Acreage properties
  • Private drives
  • Agricultural properties
  • Gated residential properties

Gate options may include ornamental iron, steel-frame designs, swing gates, sliding gates, cantilever gates, custom hillside gates, manual entrances, and automatic systems. Because we fabricate gates in our own shop, we can build around the actual driveway and property.

Designing around the property

The measured opening is only part of the equation

A rural entrance used by pickup trucks, horse trailers, tractors, and delivery vehicles may need considerably more room than a typical residential driveway.

We also look at how vehicles approach the entrance and whether they can turn through it comfortably.

Before recommending a design, we consider

  • Driveway width
  • Road width
  • Vehicle sizes
  • Trailers and farm equipment
  • Turning radius
  • Entrance setback
  • Driveway slope
  • Available swing clearance
  • Space beside the driveway
  • Existing fencing
  • Planned fencing
  • Masonry or stone columns
  • Drainage
  • Ground conditions
  • Manual or automatic operation
  • Visitor access
Custom estate gates

Architectural design, structure first

The gate may be coordinated with ornamental iron fencing, stone or masonry columns, landscaping, driveway materials, home architecture, property signage and lighting installed by other trades.

Design options may include

  • Straight-top gates
  • Arched gates
  • Double-swing gates
  • Sliding gates
  • Cantilever gates
  • Decorative pickets
  • Finials
  • Scrollwork
  • Custom steel details
  • Automatic operation

A beautiful gate that drags, sags, or fails to close is not a successful gate.

Ranch gates for working properties

Width set by the largest vehicle

A ranch entrance often has different priorities from a decorative residential gate. It may need to accommodate:

  • Pickup trucks
  • Stock trailers
  • Horse trailers
  • Tractors
  • Farm equipment
  • Utility vehicles
  • Delivery trucks
  • Maintenance vehicles

A trailer turning from a narrow road may require a much wider effective entrance than a passenger vehicle travelling straight through. A gate opened several times a day may need different hardware or automatic operation than a secondary pasture entrance used occasionally.

Configurations

Single-swing, double-swing, sliding or cantilever

Single-swing

One leaf across the driveway gives a clean appearance, but width and weight grow with the opening — placing more load on hinges, support posts, foundations, the frame and the operator.

Double-swing

Two leaves meeting near the centre balance the appearance and reduce the width each panel carries. The two gates must meet correctly when closed and keep adequate ground clearance as they open.

Sliding and cantilever

Better when the property does not have room for leaves to swing. Cantilever gates are supported beside the opening and need extra side space for the frame, supports, operator and travel path.

A sloped driveway can significantly affect whether a traditional double-swing system will work.

Sloped driveways

There is no single solution for every sloped entrance

Rural and estate properties frequently have sloped entrances, and slope can make a standard swing gate difficult or impossible to operate correctly.

We measure the actual grade before finalising the design. The right answer depends on the direction of the grade, gate width, available space, vehicles, and surrounding fence.

Stone and masonry columns

Small differences in spacing create large problems

Columns and gate should be planned together. If new columns are being constructed, final gate measurements should be coordinated before fabrication.

We can coordinate the gate requirements with the property owner or other contractors involved in the entrance.

Automatic estate and ranch gates

Enough technology to solve the problem, and no more

Automatic gates allow authorised users to enter without manually opening the entrance. The operator must be matched to the physical gate — weight, length, movement, wind exposure, operating frequency, power availability and site conditions all influence the equipment.

An automatic operator should not be used as a solution for a gate that drags or is poorly balanced.

Access control for private entrances

An access control system determines how family members, employees, guests, contractors, and service providers enter. A private residence may only need remotes and a keypad; a larger estate or ranch may benefit from a system that makes it easier to manage visitors, workers, vendors, or multiple regular users.

Telephone entry and intercoms

Telephone entry or intercom equipment lets visitors contact someone on the property before the gate opens. The device should be positioned so visitors can use it safely without stopping in the gate’s movement area — and for larger delivery vehicles, placement should consider where the vehicle will wait.

Deliveries and guests

A gate that becomes inconvenient gets left open

A gate that works well for the owner should also account for the people who occasionally need access. The property owner should consider how these users will obtain access.

Good access planning makes the gate easier to keep closed while still allowing legitimate visitors onto the property.

Local terrain and ground conditions

The gate depends heavily on its support posts

Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma include challenging terrain, and movement at a gate post quickly affects the whole entrance.

We account for visible site conditions when planning the posts, gate, and entrance. The gate posts and adjacent fence should be designed so fence tension or movement does not interfere with gate operation — for rural perimeters, see our agricultural and ranch fencing.

How an entrance is built

Our estate and ranch gate process

  1. 1

    Evaluate the entrance

We review the driveway, road, gate opening, slope, surrounding fence, vehicles, and available space.

  2. 2

    Select the gate type

Swing, double-swing, sliding, cantilever, and custom hillside configurations.

  3. 3

    Plan the design

Materials, appearance, dimensions, posts, manual or automatic operation, and access-control needs.

  4. 4

    Confirm measurements

Field measurements are verified before custom fabrication begins.

  5. 5

    Fabricate the gate

Our team fabricates the approved custom gate and related metal components in our shop.

  6. 6

    Install the support system

Gate posts and other approved supports are installed according to the project requirements.

  7. 7

    Install and adjust the gate

The gate is installed and adjusted for movement, alignment, and ground clearance.

  8. 8

    Add automatic equipment

Operators and approved access-control equipment are installed for automatic entrance projects.

  9. 9

    Final review

We review the completed entrance and address documented concerns.

Our gate work combines fencing, in-house fabrication, and access-control capabilities. That allows us to look at the complete entrance instead of treating the gate, fence, and automation as unrelated pieces.

Common questions

Estate and ranch gate questions

Visit our fencing and access control FAQ for more answers.

Do you fabricate estate and ranch gates in-house?

Yes. We fabricate custom gates through our own metal fabrication facility.

Can you build a gate wide enough for a horse trailer or farm equipment?

Yes. We plan the opening around the vehicles, trailers, turning radius, road width, and property layout.

Do you build ornamental estate gates?

Yes. We fabricate custom ornamental iron gates with selected decorative features.

Can you install a gate on a sloped entrance?

Yes. We evaluate the slope and may recommend a custom hillside, sliding, cantilever, or modified swing-gate design.

Can you install an automatic ranch gate?

Yes. Automatic operation is available for qualifying ranch and rural entrances.

Can the gate use solar power?

Solar-powered equipment may be appropriate for selected properties. Suitability depends on the gate, usage, sun exposure, and other equipment.

Can guests communicate with us from the gate?

Telephone entry and intercom systems may be installed on qualifying entrances.

Can you install a keypad?

Yes. Keypad entry is one of the access-control options available for qualifying automatic entrances.
