Automatic gate systems
An automatic gate should make entering and leaving a property easier while giving the owner greater control over who uses the entrance. For that to happen reliably, more than the operator has to be right.
Designed around the entire entrance
The physical gate needs to fit the opening. It must move freely, remain properly aligned, and be supported by posts and hardware designed for its size and weight. The operator must then be matched to the gate, how often it will open, and the conditions at the property.
Our automatic gate capabilities include
- Automatic swing gates
- Automatic sliding gates
- Automatic cantilever gates
- Residential driveway gates
- Estate and ranch entrances
- Apartment community gates
- Commercial and industrial entrances
- Pedestrian access gates
- Gate operators
- Keypads and credential-based entry
- Telephone and intercom entry
- RFID access
- Cellular entry options
- Camera integration
- Solar-powered options for suitable properties
- Automatic gate repair and maintenance
We coordinate the physical gate, fabrication, operator, and entry equipment as one system rather than treating each component as a separate project.

The biggest mistake in gate automation is starting with the operator
An operator cannot correct a gate that drags, twists, binds, or sags. Attaching an operator to a gate with an existing mechanical problem can place additional strain on the equipment.
When we design a new automatic entrance, we evaluate the gate and operator together. When automating an existing gate, we first determine whether the gate itself is suitable for automation.
Before automation is added, the gate should
- Fit the opening correctly
- Move freely
- Remain properly aligned
- Clear the ground
- Have appropriate support posts
- Use hardware suited to the gate
- Be compatible with the intended movement
Swing, sliding and cantilever
Automatic swing gates
Commonly used for residential driveways, estate entrances, apartment communities, and selected commercial properties. Planning accounts for gate width, weight, wind exposure, driveway slope, vehicle stacking, support posts and direction of travel.
If the driveway rises sharply behind the entrance, a standard gate may not have enough ground clearance to open. Our custom gate fabrication lets us consider the actual grade before the gate is built.
Automatic sliding gates
Useful when the entrance does not have enough open area for swing gates or when vehicle stacking space needs to remain available inside the property.
A sliding gate requires sufficient clear space along the fence for travel — that area should not be routinely blocked by landscaping, parked vehicles, stored materials, or other obstructions.
Automatic cantilever gates
Supported from beside the opening rather than relying on a ground track across the driveway — frequently appropriate for larger commercial and industrial entrances.
The total frame extends beyond the clear opening because part of the gate serves as a counterbalance. For large properties, see our commercial and industrial gates.

More than knowing whether the gate swings or slides
We consider gate type, dimensions and weight, expected frequency of operation, wind exposure, site conditions, available power, and connected access equipment.
A lightly used residential entrance and a frequently used apartment or commercial entrance may require very different operating systems. Our gate operators page explains this part of the system in greater detail.
Access control for automatic gates
The operator moves the gate; the access-control system determines who is allowed to activate it. Entry methods may include remote controls, keypads, card access, RFID credentials, cellular entry, telephone entry, intercom systems, and camera integration.
A private residence may only need a few remotes and a keypad. A larger commercial or apartment property may need individual credentials so management can add or remove access without changing the system for every user. Properties with frequent deliveries, customers, contractors, or guests may benefit from an entry method that allows someone inside to communicate with the visitor before opening the gate.
Slope, power and what happens in an outage
Sloped properties
With a swing gate, the driveway may prevent the gate from opening without dragging. With a sliding or cantilever system, changing elevations affect support locations and clear travel. A poorly designed gate on a slope may create repeated problems with ground clearance, alignment, hinges, rollers, operator load and closing position.
We measure and evaluate the grade before selecting the gate design.
Power and equipment planning
Automatic gates require a reliable source of operating power, and the project may also involve power for entry devices or communications equipment.
Planning should occur before finished pavement, columns, landscaping, or other site improvements make routing power more difficult. When electrical or communications work falls outside our scope, it should be coordinated with the appropriate contractor.
During a power outage
The method for operating or releasing the gate during an outage depends on the operator and entrance configuration.
Property owners and managers should understand the appropriate procedure for the installed equipment rather than waiting until an outage occurs. For commercial and managed properties, the emergency procedure should also be communicated to the people responsible for the property.
A large moving object
Its design should account for vehicles and pedestrians who may be near the entrance while it operates. Depending on the system, the project may incorporate appropriate detection or safety devices related to gate movement.
Pedestrians should have a practical path through the property, and entry equipment should not require drivers to stop within the gate’s travel area.
Problems come from the gate or the equipment
A gate may stop working properly because it drags, binds, moves out of alignment, has damaged hinges or rollers, has a bent frame, or has a shifting support post. The problem may also involve the operator or access-control equipment.
High-use gates should be monitored for changes in alignment, ground clearance, hinges, rollers, gate travel, frame condition, hardware and operator performance. A small mechanical issue can place unnecessary strain on the operator if it is ignored.
Our automatic gate installation process
1
Evaluate the entrance
We review the opening, driveway, grade, surrounding fence, vehicles, traffic patterns, and available gate movement.
2
Select the configuration
We determine whether a swing, sliding, cantilever, or another suitable gate configuration fits the property.
3
Plan the operator
The operator is selected around the physical gate and expected use.
4
Plan access control
We identify how authorized users, visitors, employees, residents, or contractors will enter.
5
Prepare the proposal
The proposal identifies the major gate, fabrication, operator, access-control, and installation components included.
6
Confirm measurements and fabricate
Final measurements are taken, and custom gate components are fabricated when required.
7
Install the gate
Posts, supports, gate components, and related fencing are installed and adjusted.
8
Install operator and entry equipment
Approved automatic and access-control equipment is installed after the physical gate is ready.
9
Test and review
We review the gate’s movement and approved operating components before completing the project.
Automatic gates are part of a broader set of capabilities that includes fencing, in-house gate fabrication, and access control. This allows us to evaluate an entrance as a complete system — whether the gate itself is properly designed, fabricating a custom gate when necessary, installing the operator, and coordinating compatible entry equipment.

What types of gates can be automated?
Swing, sliding, and cantilever gates may be automated when the gate and property are suitable for the selected system.
Can you automate my existing gate?
Possibly. We first evaluate the gate frame, posts, hinges or rollers, alignment, clearance, and movement.
Do you fabricate automatic gates?
Yes. We fabricate custom gates through our own metal fabrication facility.
Can you install an automatic residential driveway gate?
Yes. We install automatic gates for qualifying residential, estate, farm, and ranch entrances.
Do you install automatic commercial gates?
Yes. We provide automatic entrance systems for qualifying apartment, commercial, industrial, municipal, and government properties.
Can I open the gate with a keypad?
Yes. Keypad entry is one of several access-control options available.
Can I use cards or RFID credentials?
Yes. Credential-based access may be appropriate for apartment communities, businesses, industrial properties, and other managed entrances.
Can visitors communicate with someone before entering?
Telephone entry and intercom systems are available for qualifying projects.
Can an automatic gate use solar power?
Solar-powered options may be suitable for selected properties. The gate, frequency of use, sunlight, and connected equipment must be evaluated.
What happens if the power goes out?
The appropriate procedure depends on the installed operator and gate configuration. We can explain the applicable operating procedure for the selected equipment.
Do automatic gates need maintenance?
Yes. The physical gate, hinges or rollers, alignment, operator, and entry equipment should be monitored and serviced as needed.
